Real Wedding: A Light-filled Dreamy Day

So I’ve made a few resolutions, some simple, some more difficult but I think it is always beneficial to have goals to aspire to. If you are planning on setting a few be sure to write them down and read them daily. Yes, daily. There is a reason people give NY’s resolutions such a hard time. By February first most of our goals and aspirations have been buried in the pile of life not to be looked at again until next year. Writing them down holds you more accountable. It also helps to share them with someone whether that be publicly on a blog or to your best friend or your spouse. Just the fact that other people know what you are trying to do makes you more likely to achieve them. So today, I am going to share a few of mine.

  • Eat breakfast daily (Easier than it seems for someone who is completely okay with just having coffee)
  • Keep work hours to 9-6pm, no exceptions. (SOOO important when you work for yourself. It is easy to sit at my computer long into the evening and it’s time for me to start treating this more like an actual job. It also explains the reason my post is going up so late, I didn’t get to it by 6pm yesterday. Hopefully I’ll also learn to manage time better…)
  • Complete my re-branding. (This is a biggie and something I have struggled with but it is time for a change. More on this later.)
  • Improve my food photography (As a writer for a food site, it is imperative that I have better photos. I am determined to improve. However that means reading and practicing… I bought 2 books several months ago and have barely opened them. This year I will.)
  • Write one research heavy article per month. (As a free-lance writer it is easy to make excuses, get lazy and not finish projects. When you work for yourself there is no one there to hold you accountable or get you in trouble if you don’t do something. I love to write but actually having to research reminds me of when I was in school and the fun of writing goes away. My mission is to stop being lazy and push myself more.)
  • Be a better boss. (For the reasons mentioned above. I am the only one that can hold myself accountable so it is time to do just that.)

Ok- tell me what yours are. Or tell someone and be sure to keep working on them long past the end of January!

If you need a little lovely to get you inspired, you are in for a treat today! This gorgeous light filled wedding from Lavara Photography is absolutely dreamy. What’s even better is that this wedding took place in New Zealand and so it will be like a little mini-vacation for your eyes!

A few words from the lovely bride:

We were so excited to celebrate our big day with our beautiful family and our closes friends. We loved Markovina as a venue, so rustic, beautiful, simple and best of all we could have our ceremony and reception at the same place so our guests could just sit back and enjoy the day! I designed my dress by myself. Pretty nerve racking really but LOVED how it turned out. It was simple, flowey and I think suited our whole theme”. We had a friend who made our cute mini cupcake cake, and another friend put our flowers and table settings together. Just brilliant! I walked down the aisle to “Eyes for you” by Nathan King. Just represented our deep feelings for eachother. Walking down the aisle with my dad was such an amazing moment and seeing Alex at the end with tears in his eyes was so overwhelming and soooooo special! I thought “YES!!! Can’t wait to start our lives together”. We just had the greatest time. At one point we both looked at eachother and said… “Wow all our planning, our family and friends who have helped us plan this day and look…everything is just PERFECT and everyone is just having an amazing time celebrating with us” Mission accomplished!!! My advice to anyone planning a wedding is to let the groom help and have input. Many of us woman think they wouldn’t be interested or want to have there say on the tiny details. But they do!!! And doing the planning and the hard work together is the best!! Brings you together. Also on the special day ENJOY IT!! The day goes soooooooooo fast and I think its so important to try and take in everything as much as you can so you can remember how special it was. Alex and I still talk about the day when we look at photos or drive past the venue…the memories are awesome.

Don’t you just feel a bit warmer looking at all of these sun kissed images? Thank you so much to Lavara Photography for sharing this gorgeous day with us!

Cowboy Boots and Blue Skies

Happy New Year friends! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday. I sit here in slight amazement that it is all over and we have another full year to look forward to. Kyle and I celebrated the new year with our neighbors and a 19 year old bottle of Dom Perignon that my grandparents gave us. We weren’t convinced that it would still be good after all that time but it was and we drank every last bit of it. I know we all say we will be healthier in the new year but we are in some serious need of a detox. I feel like we have been eating for the last two weeks straight and part of me is truly looking forward to eating normally again and working on being healthier in the new year. Do you all make goals or resolutions?

I plan to fill this first week of 2012 with lots of lovely and I am thrilled to start with a beautiful Utah wedding complete with cowboy boots and gorgeous red rocks. The scenery reminds me a lot of where we got married which made me love this sweet wedding even more. Thomas of Sikora Photography sent this one over and as soon as I laid eyes on the portraits of the Bride and Groom in cowboy hats, I knew I had to share.

Thank you Sikora Photography for sharing this beautiful country wedding with us!

One Day In December: Take the good with the bad

This time of year generally makes us think, doesn’t it? We begin in November with a quest to be grateful and then comes December when the true reflection begins. It’s easy to point out the bad in our lives, the difficult aspects, the moments where we don’t feel like we live up to those around us, but so seemingly difficult to acknowledge the good. What’s funny really is that much of the bad makes the good happen, without the bad, we may not ever have had the good to begin with. Thus, if we really look at the series of events as a whole instead of as entirely separate, the bad really could be considered good.

Let me explain and give a little back story on how this blog began. In 2009, Kyle and I were engaged and living in Iowa. He was about to graduate as a doctor of chiropractic. Our life was in limbo but an exciting limbo. We’d be moving back to Arizona, our home, to really start our lives. However we had NO idea what that meant or what the future held for us. After a life of being students, we were finally about to grow up. Our plan was to move in with Kyle’s parents temporarily until we figured out where we wanted to live and work and what we would do next. I laugh when I look back and remember that I told my friends we’d be there two months tops. We didn’t work for several months, Kyle interviewed at various places and after working a terrible job for the past few years while Kyle was in school, I got to relax knowing I wouldn’t even start looking until he found something suitable for him.

While Kyle didn’t know exactly what he would be doing, he had a plan. He was going to be a chiropractor and it was just a matter of finding the right fit. I had no plans. I graduated with a degree in psychology with no plans to continue the degree or even work in the field. At age 25, I had no idea what I wanted to be when I grew up. However all the free time was what lead me to start a blog and gave me the time to figure how what a blog was, how Twitter worked, and gave me the first glimpse at something I really loved; writing.

After a series of interviews and even offers that just didn’t feel right we made a huge decision. Kyle’s long term goal was to have his own practice and the plan would be for me to work in the office to help in the early stages.  Instead of working incredibly hard, for little money, for someone else to benefit, we decided to jump over the baby steps and fly right into owning our own practice. It was both incredibly exciting and scary. We didn’t buy an established practice, we started from scratch with no patients and only the basic essentials. No paid job meant we’d stay living with Kyle’s parents.

Fast forward a year and a half, we were married, the clinic was growing slowly but surely, my blog had grown from a personal journal to a source of inspiration for strangers, and we were still living with Kyle’s parents. As you might imagine it wasn’t always ideal but without it we wouldn’t be here. Kyle wouldn’t be fulfilling his dreams and I may have never figured out what mine were. My blog lead to a free lance writing job, a paid free lance writing job. And the best part, I finally had a passion. I was getting paid to do something I loved, came easy to me, and never felt like a chore. People ask me all the time if I am going to become a wedding planner. It seems many bride bloggers have taken that path, I laugh, knowing I am not cut out for that job. I just want to write… about weddings, charity, and now food.

We’ve had ups and downs. We are on an extremely tight budget meaning we have to forego many things our friends with conventional jobs are doing. But we are happy. At age 27, we both know what we love, we get to do it every day, and it can only go up from here. We don’t cringe at the thought of going to work, we have no bosses to complain about, and all the work we put in equals direct rewards for ourselves. Life isn’t always perfect, situations don’t always play out how you planned, but I think if we start to find the good in the bad, we will realize how truly grateful we should be, all year round.

For the record, we no longer live with Kyle’s parents. But we did for two years, including our first year of marriage. All four of our lives changed immensely in that time period and I think we were all right where we needed to be for the time we were there. Kyle and I continue to be grateful for the way our path played out and for where it continues to go in the future. We are grateful for the struggles, the success, the stress, and even the pain because without it we wouldn’t be where we are today and this place is right where we want to be.

Merry Christmas to you all! Take a moment to read Krissy‘s post from yesterday and Orly’s post for tomorrow. Catch up on all the posts here.

A bit of holiday cheer

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, the online community of bloggers is one of the most amazing networks I have been a part of. So far all of my connections have been women but I am sure there are some fab men out there too. Anyway, these ladies are passionate, supportive, motivated and all around amazing. I am beyond thrilled to call all of these people my friends. It is safe to say I would have never met any of them in any other way especially those that live half way around the world so the fact that I have is a pure blessing. On that note, Jessica of Two Wedding Belles organized a little holiday card exchange and I was so excited to head to my mail box each day to see who would be sending cards to me.

A big thank you to the following bloggers!

Amanda of Baci Designer Stationery
Jessica of Two Wedding Belles
Greta of Northwoods Wedding Company
Silke of Secret Jewel Weddings (A wedding planner from Cancun!)
Laura of Laura Lavender Calligraphy and Illustration (Can you guess which one is hers?)

And I also included Layla’s card who wasn’t part of this exchange but was kind enough to send a card just out of good will.

Layla of Wish Fulfillment Everyday

Thank you ladies!!

And here is a little peek at what has been going on around our house as of late.

AND

How about a little extra weight for Christmas?!

You can find those recipes here and here.

Gifts that Give Back: Round #4

Happy Monday my friends! Since Christmas is Sunday and Hanukkah starts tomorrow, this will be the last rounds of Gifts that Give Back. I can assure you that there are MANY more great gift options that do good, so if you have some last minute gifts to buy or as you shop throughout the year for birthdays or other occasions think about hunting for something that has a purpose.

Kyle and I decided to make tamales for the first time ever last night. Eating Mexican food for Christmas Eve or Christmas even has long been a tradition in both of our families and instead of buying a bunch from a local restaurant, we decided to tackle the challenge ourselves. We were met with multiple warnings that it was the worst process of all time but we forged onward. We were up until 11pm making them but to be honest we enjoyed the process. It was fun to spend the day in the kitchen working together and doing something that was foreign to both of us. We haven’t tasted them yet but I can assure you that tamale making may just be a new tradition. What are your favorite traditions?

Pottery Barn Teen has these adorable pet pillows that help support the ASPCA. $5 from every pillow sold goes to help animals in need and according to their site just $20 can feed a hungry animal for 3 weeks. They are great for kids or teens but I love them too so I have to think that dog loving adults would be equally pleased by such a gift.

These colorful bangles sold through Project Have Hope are made from recycled paper and help women in Uganda.

“Look good, Do Good” is the motto for Altruette, a jewelry company that offers charm bracelets and various other items. 50% of net profits go to help various charities.

If your gift of choice includes something edible, these sweet treats from Dancing Dear Baking Co. will fit the bill. They donate 35% of proceeds to help homeless families.

Burlap Thursday: Ruffle Tree Skirt

We are a mere 10 days away from Christmas. 10 days. And if you are more of a Hanukkah celebrator you only have 5 days until the fun begins. Does it come faster and faster every year? I continue to see Facebook posts about people hunting for and trimming their newly selected tree so I know for many, the decorating is still in full swing! I about squealed with delight when I came across this adorable DIY. I am actually in the process of trying to figure out how I can make something like this that is not a tree skirt so I can use it all year round. And if I had a few spare hours I would have made my own version, but alas I do not so thank god for the internet and for this lovely lady, Ashley, who did all the work for us.

Some notes… this is a NO sew project. I am obsessed with my glue gun and aside for some pretty painful burns I love using it over  my sewing machine. I am all about quick and easy with a gorgeous end result. Perhaps I could make a lamp shade or a table cloth using this technique? Thoughts?

You will need:
  • A rotary board & cutter
  • Scissors
  • Glue gun & Glue sticks
  • about 4 yards of fabric
  • Your old Christmas tree skirt

I am going to give you the basic steps, to read about the whole process head over to The Johnston’s blog.

Cut your fabric into strips, the length doesn’t really matter but they should be of equal width. Ashley used 3 inch strips.

Get your glue gun ready and start gluing! Be careful this is where fingers get hurt. Ruffle the fabric as you go. She has a few tips for gluing the burlap that may just save you from scorching your tips.

I’ll be the first to admit that this looks a bit tedious and could take some time but the results. ARE. WORTH. IT!

Don’t you kind of want to wear it?! It is amazing and of course you could use any fabric that suited you although I don’t see what you wouldn’t want burlap.

Guest Post: Tips on Making Your Own Invitations

Jennifer Morris from Bride&Groom is here today to give some tips on making your own wedding invitations. Bride&Groom has a wide selection of wedding stationery and accessories to fit any budget! Jennifer is filled with all sorts of wedding knowledge and writes about wedding planning  for Bride & Groom and other wedding sites. We are thrilled she has agreed to share a few ideas that will not only make your invitations unique but also may make them more budget friendly.

Making Your Own Wedding Invitations

Your wedding invitations are more than just an announcement of your wedding day. They’re an expression of your personal style and a cue for your guests about the kind of ceremony you’ll have. Make the message they bear much more than just the who, what, when and where of your wedding with wedding invitations you make yourself. A beautifully designed wedding invitation is a little gift of art from you to your guests. They’ll cherish the invitation itself as a memento of the occasion, so make your invitations special.

Printed Invitations

The days of dot-matrix printers and perforated paper are long gone. Modern kits let you make your own wedding invitations that match professional invitations in quality. Unlike professionally engraved invitations, you have your choice of something livelier than bells, birds and bows to decorate your invitations. Look for art, fonts and paper that says something special about you and your future spouse. If you’re both movie buffs, you might choose a film border for your invitations. Pay a whimsical homage to your mutual love of coffee or collies in your art choices.

Hand-Decorated Invitations

Smaller weddings give you the chance to personalise each invitation. You don’t have to be an artist to create fanciful stamps or stencils to adorn your invitations. Craft stores sell stamps that give you a huge range of options. Of course, if you do happen to be an artist, painting landscapes or sketching portraits for individual invitations will make an unforgettable impact. Keep your time constraints in mind, though; it’s easy to become so wrapped up in hand-painting your DIY wedding invitations that you miss the deadline to send them.

Art Papers

Decorative papers make any wedding invitation look special. Try your hand at embossing your own thicker card stock or buy ready-made embossed paper to decorate part or all of the front of the invitation. Papers with flowers, glitter or leaves embedded in the fibers have a gorgeous handmade look to them. If you’re truly ambitious, you could make your own paper, embedding flowers from your garden or that match your bouquet in the paper. Trim invitations that include multiple types of paper with ribbon to hide the seams where papers join for a polished look.

Trim

Make your own wedding invitations shine with ribbons, beadwork or other decorative accents that add style without contributing costly bulk to the invitations. You’ll need to pay postage on everything in the envelope, so choose lightweight materials such as feathers or origami paper designs instead of metal ornaments or glass beads. One sweet idea: use items you collected together on your beach vacation or a romantic picnic as decorative elements on your invitations.

Don’t be afraid to move beyond folded rectangular invitations on light-hued paper. Round, square or triangular invitations have their own unusual charm. Silver and gold inks give you leeway to use any colour you like for the paper. The important thing is that you infuse your invitations with plenty of personal style. They can’t help but be a hit when you put a little of yourself into each handmade wedding invitation.

Tell us! Would you consider making your invitations yourself? If so, what little bits of your personalities would you want to infuse into your invites?

Inspirational Board: The Military

Today’s inspiration is our military. With many people heading home for the holidays, wherever that may be, it is easy to forget about the men and women serving our country who are far from home. Many troops will get to return home at the end of this year but many more will still be in various places around the world serving this country and only able to think of fond memories of being home for the holidays. When you are making your holiday card list this year, consider sending a card to a member of our military. The kind gesture will make them feel closer to home than you may realize.

You can send cards through the Holiday Mail for Heroes campaign.
