Trash the Dress Friday!

So if we’re friends on Facebook you likely heard that someone asked me the other day if I was pregnant. I should mention I was sitting down, behind a desk meaning there was no belly in sight. I asked her why she would ask that and she said, “Because you have a beautiful glow about you.” No lady, a simple you look nice today is a much better compliment. So as a public service announcement I wanted to tell you all in case you were unclear, it is NEVER okay to ask someone if they are pregnant. Never. IF they want to tell you, they will. If not you risk a really awkward situation most times insinuating that someone is over weight. This question is an extra bad idea when you ask strangers which I assume is always the case as you’d probably know if your friend was pregnant. But either way it is none of your business, so don’t ask. Whether she asked because I had a huge belly which could only be attributed to wine (which is not the case…) at this point or because I literally was glowing, it never feels like a compliment. Just thought you should know as clearly not everyone does. Has anyone ever asked you a question that resulted in a really awkward situation?

Moving on to more appropriate things… Trashed dresses. Or in this cash just a little junk yard sesh in a gorgeous wedding gown. The edgy shots were captured by Pilster Photography. This bride, Jessica, had a gorgeous Vera Wang gown but knew she wanted to wear it one more time and have a little fun with it. To ensure she didn’t actually ruin it she did a ton of research and came up with the perfect concept for a fun shoot that didn’t actually destroy her lovely frock. I’ll let her explain her best tips for gingerly trashing your dress.

From Jessica:

Selecting a wedding dress is like choosing your husband: you have to weed through all the rejects before you find the one that suits you perfectly. When the last flute of champagne is drained and the last song swayed to on the dance floor, you’re stuck with the most exciting thing you’ve ever worn just hanging in your closet. Rejoice! You can once again zip yourself into that pristine white frock–and trash it.

I know–gasp. But, before you start spewing about what went into the handmade lace overlay atop your Vera Wang, read on. I discovered how to have a fun, down-and-dirty photo shoot and all my precious dress needs is a trip to a good dry cleaner.

First thing’s first: create a concept. I started by Googling “Trash the Dress” and “Rock The Frock” and found that everyone has a different idea of what it means. Most of the sessions I came across involved bright paint, water or mud. I wanted to do something different. So I brainstormed and came up with the idea to be in my beautiful wedding gown in an environment completely opposite. My first thought was a landfill. My husband quickly told me I wouldn’t last five minutes at a landfill. (We saw an episode of Modern Marvels a few days later featuring a landfill and he was so right!)

Then I thought of a junkyard. I pictured myself all dirty-ed up, wearing my dress and some black motorcycle boots, surrounded by broken down cars, dumpsters and old parts. I was excited to see the juxtaposition of the stark white dress thrown into the anything-but-white surroundings. Some brides choose to smear stuff down their dresses. For me, this shoot was more about juxtaposition and less about physically dirtying fabric.

Next, do some research. You need to know the exact fabric of your dress. How many layers does it have? What are they made of? A lot of this information should be found on the tag of the dress or the paperwork from your purchase, but if you can’t find what you’re looking for you can always call the store. If you get to know your dress, it will be easier to clean. My particular dress has a tulle netting overlay that can be really difficult to clean because of its delicateness. For this reason, we bought thin plastic painters’ tarps to lay down to protect the surface of the dress. From what I saw, you might be surprised how resilient your little number can be.

Substances like grease are near impossible to remove from fabric, but your normal, everyday, run-of-the-mill dirt can usually be removed by dry cleaning or hand washing. I saw a lot of online posts from brides who used washable paint on their dress and then soaked it in their shower and hung it to dry with no problems. Lastly, you want to give some thought to the type of things you might run into where you’ve chosen to do your shoot. I knew there was a good chance I’d come in contact with some grease because I was at a junkyard. If you’re in a wooded area doing something with mud, for example, you should be careful of twigs and branches that can catch the whispy top layers of your dress and tear them.

Along the same lines of getting to know your dress and thinking about what it may come in contact with, before you do a trash the dress photo shoot it’s a good idea to think about the level at which you are comfortable trashing the dress you got married in. I talked to my parents (who bought my dress for me) and asked if there was anything that would make them uncomfortable. Ultimately, they told me to do whatever I wanted to do, but I certainly didn’t want to seem ungrateful. Mostly you have to be honest and realistic with yourself.

Whether or not you plan to pass your dress onto a cousin or future daughter, renew your vows in it or preserve it to hang in a closet for the rest of eternity, it’s still your wedding dress. Figure out how you feel about it. Everyone’s different. Are you sentimental about it? Is it just another dress? Thinking about this ahead of time will ensure you don’t get caught up in the moment or allow a photographer to push you into doing something you’ll cry yourself to sleep about later.

I was actually pretty set that my dress was going to make it out of the shoot without so much as a smudge, but I changed my mind that day and decided that if it had a few bumps and bruises for the sake of art they would serve as a memory of the photo shoot. We ditched the plastic tarps and I just went with it. Having not been careful at all, other than holding it up when I walked (black, dirty sand is not a good look), it really didn’t get very dirty. The chapel-length train and under layers are pretty black, but I’ve seen worse from just a wedding reception. As long as you and your photographer know what to expect going in, you can always choose not to take certain precautions you came prepared to take.

Finally, you gotta commit! I am the girliest girl of all time and I was sitting on questionable car seats, leaning my face on headrests riddled with unknown substances and doing my best to ignore the spiders. Whatever setting you choose, you have to commit to what you’re doing. Have fun with it and make it believable! You don’t have to dive into a pool to get a great shot, but you can’t be afraid to touch and interact and climb, explore and push yourself out of your comfort zone. Release your inner supermodel!

Thank you so much to Jessica for her fab advice and to Pilster Photography for sharing this fun session!

Trash the Dress Friday: Halloween Edition!

If this sesh looks familiar, it’s because I posted it last year around this time. In fact, it was THE Trash the Dress Session that got this whole series started. Of course it is perfectly fitting as we head into Halloween weekend but I also thought it would be a fun way to mark one year of TTD sessions! I absolutely adore the variety and creativity of TTD sessions and I can’t wait to see what the next year of them brings! This session also forged a friendship with the two photographers responsible, Raeleen and Andy of Fancy Fin Photography. I had the pleasure of meeting them, they are based in Seattle, and working on a shoot with them here in Az. This session easily ranks as one of my favorites even after the dozens I have seen so far.

I hope it gets you into the Halloween spirit! What are your plans? What are you dressing up as? If I am being honest, Kyle and I don’t get overly excited about Halloween. This year we plan to do what old people do, hand out candy.

Have a SAFE and Happy Halloween!!

Trash the Dress Friday: A Striking Pose

I am slightly in shock that it is Friday already. Where on earth did this week/month go? Anyone have any fun plans like, oh a wedding this weekend? Kyle and I officially have no plans and that is exactly the way we wanted it to be! Last week was a whirlwind of traveling and it seems like every weekend leading up to it was packed with this or that, so we are looking forward to days filled with relaxing. On Sunday, we’ll be celebrating the first birthday of our favorite set of twins, but that barely counts as a plan because those two little ladies are so cute and we can’t wait to kick off their first birthday in style. We are also expecting a cool down which means fall like weather might actually make its way in to town and I will actually be able to  make my way to the other side of my closet. Temps in the 90′s are much too high for late October as far as I’m concerned.

While browsing Pinterest as I often do anytime I’m looking for any form of inspiration, I came across this image that I fell instantly in love with. Because I think it is so fabulous, I decided to post it all on it’s own. I love when couples and photographers utilize new and different poses in shoots. A great pose can take a simple shot and turn it into a great one. This pose proves that you don’t need a pile of props or any crazy amounts of dress trashing to get a great photo. Can you imagine this blown up on canvas?

Trash the Dress Friday: Featuring Shannon Kelley

I don’t know about you but I am thrilled that Friday is here! It has been a long eventful week for me and to top it off we have a very special weekend on our hands. Kyle and I are celebrating our first anniversary this weekend! It is crazy amazing how fast time has flown by and all that has happened in this past year. I vividly remember how excited I was on my wedding day, how fun it was to get ready with my best friends, the nerves and anticipation of the first look, and all the fun that took place after the vows were finished. It is a true treat to be married to such a wonderful person and someone I consider to be my best friend. In a twist of fitting fate, there is a fund raising event this weekend for the charity that part of our wedding funds went towards. We will be celebrating a year of marriage at the dinner event for Camp Soaring Eagle and I can’t even imagine a better way to honor one year of marriage. But enough about me… because this is a crazy week I asked for a bit of help with posts. Shannon Kelley stepped up and offered to do Trash the Dress Friday. Shannon is an amazing photographer but even more so, an amazing person. She is getting ready to move to Haiti to make a bigger impact on the lives there. I am going to let her take it away!

When Alicia asked me to do a guest post for the fabulous Trash the Dress Friday I knew exactly what I wanted to show you all. It’s not over the top, it’s no spray paint or mud, but it is a way to get candid photos and have fun in your dress without sacrificing it to the actual trash.

Lindsay, the beautiful bride, got married in a destination wedding on the beach in North Carolina. She worked in a day after photo session with her groom followed by an impromptu trash the dress session. We hit the beach early in the morning. Lindsay had a shawl made by one of her grandmother’s and used it for a portion of the session. After that we hit the ocean and had some fun splashing in the waves.

To me this is such a perfect middle ground of trashing your dress but also keeping it in tact and not ruining it totally. You can definitely get some amazing photos in a trash the dress session that typically wouldn’t be afforded on the wedding day but often times I hear from brides who do want to keep their dress but want that fun candid trash the dress feel. This is such a great way to marry the two. Pun intended.

Shannon Kelley is a wedding photographer currently living in Knoxville, TN but moving to Haiti in January of 2012 with her family in an effort to make the most of this life. She will continue to photograph weddings at certain times of the year but will also be working on humanitarian efforts with World Wide Village. Follow her journey on her blog.

Trash the Dress Friday: In the Pool

We got our first taste of fall this week and I must say, it has been glorious. I got to pull clothes from the other side of my closet and I even busted out the scarves! One of the best things about the weather changing is that it always feels like you got a bunch of new clothes. This cool front won’t likely last too long around here so I am going to soak it in. The only downside is that all I want to do is stay in bed, watch movies, and drink warm drinks. Let’s hope it sticks around through the weekend and you’ll know exactly what I’ll be doing. First in the movie line up, Pride and Prejudice, naturally. What are your plans?

This Trash the Dress session from Juliane Berry will likely take you back to summer. The ladies decided to complete this fun session at the pool! The session effortlessly blends a little bit of fun with a more sultry side and the results are beautiful.

Have a great weekend!

Trash the Dress Friday: Make a Splash!

Kyle and I are going to attempt a little painting project this weekend which he is in no way excited about. It is guaranteed to be a bit tedious and slightly time consuming but I am convinced that the results will be worth it! Since we already have paint on hand it will also be free which fits our budget perfectly. I have a feeling it will makeover the space in a way no other free thing could… so stay tuned. If we finish or if it turns out as fabulous as I imagine, I will post pics. If not… well then we will probably be heading to the store to actually buy paint to fix the disaster. But let’s stay positive. The plan is to make over my office space so I have a nice space to blog away. Right now it is filled with scraps of fabric and all sorts of other random bits of things. I do want it to double as a craft space but it needs to be tidied up. Since our budget is essentially $0, we are going to see how creative we can be.

Moving right along to today’s TTD Sesh. It took place at Bald River Falls in Tennessee but it looks like something straight out of a fairytale. The scenery is gorgeous, the bride stunning, the images crisp and fabulous! It comes to us courtesy of Jo Photo. Thanks to their beautiful images, a trip to Tennessee is officially on the agenda.

Now that is what I call a TTD session! Gorgeous and fun!

Have a great weekend! Cross your fingers that Kyle and I don’t have any painting meltdowns!

Trash the Dress Friday: In Prison!

We have a wedding to go to this weekend which makes this particular weekend super exciting! I love weddings (clearly) and even more so I love fall weddings plus I adore this couple so that sounds like the combo for an excellent time. The wedding will be taking place in their parent’s backyard and well, who doesn’t love a backyard wedding!? This is actually no ordinary backyard, in fact I think it is doing it a disservice to call it that. I’ll have to snap some terrible blackberry pics to give you an idea. Anyway, that is actually tonight which is even more fabulous because it leaves the whole weekend open for even more fun. The wedding party and family are planning to hit up a local wine festival the next day and I just might have to join them. What are your plans for the weekend?

Today’s Trash the Dress sesh has to go on my list of favorites. I know the list gets longer and longer by the week but I can’t get enough of this one! The talented team at BG Productions were the brains behind this incredible shoot. The photogs, Cathie and Al decided to take a trip to Eastern State Penitentiary on Valentine’s Day. Cathie loved the history of the place which once housed Al Capone, but even more so she fell in love with the architecture and surroundings. Right then and there she knew it would be an incredible place for a shoot. All it took was a few photos posted to Facebook and comment that she’d love to do a TTD session there and this couple, Mary Beth and Tim, stepped up to the plate! You have to reserve a time to use the prison as a photo opp, pay a fee, and you only get 1 hour. Which to me, makes this whole shoot even more impressive!

Are you in LOVE with this?! The creepy backdrop gives me goosebumps just looking at it! How cool to do a shoot in a little piece of history! Thanks so much Cathie for sharing this with us!

Visit BG Productions on Facebook for more great shoots!

Trash the Dress Friday: Just a Couple in Love

Do you remember when you used to look forward to Friday because it meant a full night of TGIF, including shows like Full House, Step by Step, and  Boy Meets World. Those were the days. Someone should create a retro-TGIF tribute and bring those shows back. After a long week, a good, wholesome episode of Family Matters may be exactly what I need. Are you with me? They may actually be even better as now we can enjoy them with wine. Annnd moving right along.

I am thrilled to introduce you all to Kurt Boomer Photo today. Kurt’s work is absolutely gorgeous and this session is no exception. If you were simply browsing through this post wedding session, you may just think they were from the wedding day itself. Of course it didn’t hurt that this couple is gorgeous. Kurt didn’t photograph this couple’s wedding, but he did get the chance to be involved in this shoot in the back country of San Juan Capistrano. Be sure to stop by Kurt’s blog but be prepared to spend some time there, the lovely photos will suck you in. You won’t find any mud, water or trashed dresses here but the details, the dog, and the photos will delight you! Just another reminder that Trash the Dress is just a catchy name for a post wedding shoot whether you decided to trash your dress or not!

Have a great weekend!

Trash the Dress Friday!

I’m heading off to Camp Soaring Eagle this weekend to spend my days fishing, crafting, and horse back riding. I am crossing my fingers for a major cool down as 110 degrees simply isn’t good fishing weather. All the kiddos in this bunch have diabetes and their dietary restrictions and need for frequent monitoring of their blood sugar, makes it difficult if not impossible for them to attend other camps for children. I am excited to meet them and let them just relax and have fun in an environment where everyone understands their condition, the other kids understand as they have it too, and they are completely safe. The kids in this group are older as I am used to having 6-8 year olds. So I am looking forward to catching up on what is hip in High School now days. Probably not the word hip. What are your big weekend plans?

Of course I can’t let you start your weekend without an amazing Trash the Dress session! This one comes to you from Matthew R Photo. The crew decided to head out to a dam to do a little dress destruction, relax it just got wet. The Bride is pretty much a model and she rocked the shoot. I love the industrial type architecture, the graffiti, the murky water and how all of that clashes with this gorgeous couple.  Enjoy.

Have a great weekend!

Trash the Dress Friday: Retro Chic

I’m sure I don’t have to tell you this but it is FRIDAY and the Friday of a three day weekend. This of course is exciting, but also, HOW is it September already? It is blowing my mind. Where did this year go? So what are everyone’s plans? Some consider this like the last hurrah of Summer… so are you BBQ-ing, heading to the lake, going camping? This is no where near the last weekend of Summer for us so pretty much it is just another weekend. Except I have to be honest, when I was browsing the ads and I kept seeing sales on grills, meat, and cakes with flags, I thought is it Fourth of July?! Honestly, I really can’t accept that it is September.

I am loving the Trash the Dress Session I have for you today and I knew I would love it before I even opened it. Why? It was from the lovely Amber of A Bit of Joy Photography. She’s been on the blog before with one of my favorite TTD-type shoots ever. So I am thrilled to have her back with this retro chic inspired beach session. The bride is gorgeous, the car is amazing, and the lighting on the beach is just perfect. It feels very summery, and just perfect for a send off to Labor Day weekend.

Have a happy and safe weekend Lovelies!
