Why are we still talking about gay marriage?

I’m breaking back into the blogging scene because well, I just can’t hold this in any longer. The greatest thing about a blog is that even if you ignore it for months on end, it will still be there waiting for you when you want to rant, rave or just share something lovely. Pardon me today while I rant just a bit.

Here’s the thing, I am not going to discuss why or why I don’t support gay marriage. To me, that isn’t the issue. The issue is that the entire subject is a non-issue or at least it should be. We shouldn’t be discussing it, it shouldn’t be filling the nightly news, it shouldn’t be discussed by fast food establishments, we shouldn’t voting on it and we certainly shouldn’t be spending a single penny on trying to convince other people whether or not we believe in it in hopes that they will believe what we believe.

People are starving. People are dying of cancer, heart disease, and various other things every day. People don’t have clean water to drink. 10,000 animals are euthanized every day. Thousands of children are stuck in the foster care system. People need jobs. People are going into public places and are shooting at random. Soldiers are dying. We are essentially destroying the environment. We are one of the unhealthiest countries, with the most resources, on the map. Children are illiterate. Adults are buried in student loan debt. 12 people just died in a movie theater. I could go on, but I’ll stop there. The fact of the matter is that there are real problems facing this country. Life and death problems. Problems that affect our lives and the lives of those around us.

I believe in a lot of things. I believe people should have to take some sort of test before having children. I believe that no dog should die in a shelter or be in one in the first place. I believe veterans should receive more support. I believe we should all have access to high quality, affordable health care. I believe people should invest more time and energy in health and nutrition and less in drugs and sickness care. I believe every single person should go to a chiropractor. I believe people should clean up after their children at restaurants. I believe I should get paid just for being awesome. I believe I should be able to eat macaroni and cheese every day without gaining weight. I believe all people should be required to volunteer their time. I believe wine should be free, straight out of my kitchen sink.

I believe in a lot of things- some good, some moral, some just plain crazy-  but never at any point do I expect my beliefs to become laws. Laws are made to protect others, they are made for the good of society, and they are made to prevent one person’s decisions or actions from impacting others in the society in a negative way. Don’t kill people. Don’t steal things. Don’t run through red lights. Those laws make sense, they keep you and I safe.

Gay marriage- let’s break it down. If two men that you’ll never meet, that live thousands of miles away, that have jobs, volunteer regularly, and like to drink coffee go ahead and get married, how will that impact you? Does it interfere with your safety? Does it inhibit your rights in any way? If two women, who have loved each other for years, raised children together, traveled the world together, and live in your city, get married, how will that impact you? When I got married how did that impact you? Did you even know? When I got married, did your life change? When my parents got married and subsequently divorced, did that impact your marriage or the sanctity of marriage in general? When my dad got remarried and then divorced once again, did your world come crashing down? Was the world made any worse or any better from any of these marriages?

So why are we talking about it? Since when do we as a country get to decide what people do in their personal lives? We are wasting time and resources on an issue that has nothing to do with protecting society. If gay people are an issue to you, inhibiting them from getting married isn’t going to make them disappear. It’s not going to make your marriage better or worse. It’s not going to prevent divorce. It isn’t going to prevent loving, committed relationships between same sex couples and it surely isn’t going to make this world a better place to live in.

In fact it is doing just the opposite. This discussion is spawning more hate, inspiring intolerance, and making it all the more likely that a child will begin to feel like they are worthless. Where is the moral integrity in that scenario? What about intolerance and judgment proves your beliefs? What about making someone feel badly about themselves is loving or kind?

People get married every single day that shouldn’t. People get married every single day that end up divorced, some in just 72 days. But the fact of the matter is that is none of our business. People have the right to make bad choices or good ones, the right to believe what they want even if we don’t agree, and certainly people should have the right to marry regardless of their sexual orientation.

Why? Because personal decisions, relationships, love… each have nothing to do with anyone else except the people involved. Spend your time fighting for peace, to end hunger, to make the world a better place for your children. Because all this gay marriage talk is just wasting our time. Stop worrying about other people’s lives and start fighting for something that really makes a difference in yours.

If the issue of freedom is at question here, whether it be speech or in general, something isn’t adding up. Imagine what would happen if all this energy going into the gay marriage debate was put towards helping others. I think collectively, regardless of which side we are on, we just might be able to change the world. Fight for something that will make a difference in the lives of others and watch yours improve exponentially. Surely we can all agree that love always prospers over hate, kindness is more gratifying than intolerance, and acceptance is much better than rejection.

MJ said it best. If you want to make the world a better place, take a look at look at yourself and then make a change.

Send a Jam Gram!

Hello Lovelies! Jacin of Lovely Little Details is at it again with her Jars of Love! She’s made a big ol’ batch of fruity jams for you to enjoy and all the proceeds are going to help 4 year old Matthew who has leukemia. The Jam Gram includes a jar of jam, a cute little elephant spreading knife and a card. It would be a sweet gift to send to a friend or family member.

Confession: I don’t like jam. I never ate peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, because well I am not a fan of jam or jelly. But Kyle loves it so I ordered a jar during Jacin’s last fund raiser and I’m serious you guys, I could have eaten it with a spoon. We were putting it on everything from toast to turkey sandwiches. In fact, when no one was looking, I would just stick my finger in the jar and eat it just like that.

Head to her Etsy Shop to get yours!

Shop and Give back at The Gap!

Shopping and giving back in the same sentence… yep you read it right! Spring is fast approaching so I am sure we could all use a few cute spring tops or perhaps a few floral frocks to add to our spring wardrobe. Megan of Glamour and Grace contacted me and asked me to share this fab fundraiser going on at her local Gap store in Sarasota, Fl.

Megan’s co-worker has a child who has cerebral palsy. The little girl suffered complications during birth which left her with cerebral palsy and her twin sister unfortunately did not survive. The Conductive Education Center has been extremely helpful for this family and for other families who have children with disabilities. The Gap is stepping in to help raise money for the center.

On February 25-26th (this weekend) for every $5 donation, you will get 25% off your purchase and The Gap will be donating additional money to the cause as well. So if you are in Florida, get shopping!!

To learn more about the event or the Conductive Education center see these flyers.

Below are some photos of the children who are helped by Conductive Education Center.

*Fundraiser and associated discounts are only applicable at South Gate Gap in Sarasota, Fl.

One Hope, Many Causes

Photo via

That’s the slogan for OneHope Wine. This wine company is no stranger to this blog, we’ve talked about them a few times before. If you know me you know I love giving back and I love wine so for me OneHope wine is pretty much perfection. Half of all proceeds from each bottle go to the corresponding charity and to date over $600,000 has been donated to partner charities. These are the varietals they offer and their corresponding causes.

ONEHOPE Chardonnay (Breast Cancer)
ONEHOPE Sauvignon Blanc (Environment)
ONEHOPE Cabernet Sauvignon (Autism)
ONEHOPE Merlot (AIDS)
ONEHOPE Zinfandel (Troops)
ONEHOPE Pinot Noir (Children’s Hospitals)

I bring them up again today because they have made it easier than ever for couples and wedding vendors to incorporate charity into their weddings through wine.

OneHope Weddings allows couples to find out all they need to know about buying this wine for their big day and you can even schedule a private tasting to determine which varietal would be best for your event.

They are now offering discount pricing for couples buying in bulk and later down the road they hope to offer some customizable options.

So whether you are planning a wedding and want to serve this wine, offer it as favors, or even if you are just like me and you love wine, definitely try it. Giving back has never been easier and it has certainly never tasted better. Cheers!

Meet the foster pup!

We’ve taken in yet another foster dog that was left at the pound. The shelter contacted the Golden Bone Rescue, who we’ve fostered with before, to say that they had a small dog and they wanted him out of there. When I was asked to foster, it was mentioned that the ladies at the shelter were not a fan of this dog which made me a little apprehensive. Any dogs that display aggressive, fearful, or obnoxious behaviors don’t have a long life span at the pound. But imagine if you will being put in a cold, strange environment with a ton of other barking dogs, you’d likely be aggressive, fearful and/or obnoxious too. Generally once the dogs are in a safe and calm environment, they are just fine. So, I’m a sucker, and I said sure. What was the alternative really?

This skinny little dog weighs all of ten pounds and I can feel just about all of his bones. He is scrappy and scrawny but as sweet as can be. Now, I will say, I may have figured out why they didn’t like him at the pound. He makes this amazing noise that is the mixture of Chewbacca and a Velociraptor. If you forget the noise a raptor makes, watch Jurassic Park. The noise though is so impressive I can’t even fault him for it.

Did I mention that he has a mohawk? A few people have asked me about fostering, is it hard to give them back? Do you get attached? We do get attached but we know we are a means to an end and we have never felt bad about giving a dog to a home that we know will love it to pieces. When you get a orphaned dog they have the saddest most distant look in their little eyes. They are essentially lost. My favorite part of the whole process is watching those eyes change from lost to happy, comfortable and safe. There is nothing better than coming home and seeing that little dog wag his tail and jump on you, thrilled to see you. Dogs are so amazingly forgiving, they don’t hold on to their pasts, they move forward and live in the moment. We could all learn something from these little pups.

Now that you’ve met, you should know he doesn’t have a name. As the foster parents we get the privilege of naming the little guy. So help us out! Here are some of the suggestions so far, and feel free to send us some more!

  • Scrappy
  • Scoop
  • Conner
  • Doug
  • Fritz
  • Spike
  • Yoda
  • Benson
  • Baxter
  • Rex
  • Buster
  • Bacon
  • Riley
  • Wiley
  • Jack
  • Nigel

We’re Walking for Life!

You know on the movies when wives spend a ton of money on shoes or shopping and their husbands get the credit card bill and freak out? Well, we have that similar situation. Except Kyle finds random print outs or gets emails– donation receipts and I hear, “What did you donate to NOW?!” I’m addicted. I can’t stop. But I consider it the best possible problem I could have. Minus that I also really like shoes… It doesn’t take much, a sweet little puppy face and we are fostering, a child with diabetes and we are spending our weekends fishing and crafting, a group of Mom’s who have children with cancer get to go on a shopping spree and I think, they’ll probably need champagne (Kyle doesn’t know about that one yet), or this…

All it took was this line…

Help the American Cancer Society create a world with

less cancer and more birthdays.

I was sold. Cancer affects so many lives and it is guaranteed to affect your life at some point whether that be a friend, a family member or even yourself. No one is safe, not the young, not the old, it doesn’t stay away from the otherwise healthy or even babies. Cancer is a major issue and if we can help do our part to create more birthdays, especially for the people we love, we’re going to do it! Right, Kyle?! He agrees, don’t worry.

We’ll be walking for 12 hours to represent the fact that cancer doesn’t stop or sleep, those 12 hours are from 6pm-6am. But it seems like a small sacrifice really. Our goal is to raise at least $1,500. If you’ve been touched by cancer we’d love for you to donate in someone’s honor or memory and we’ll walk for them too.

You can help support our team here. All donations are tax deductible. You may also want to see if there is a Relay for Life event in your area.

Gifts That Give Back: Stocking Stuffers!

We are sitting right at the 2 weeks before Christmas mark! Are you ready or freaking out because you haven’t even started shopping yet? In my opinion it comes faster and faster every year. For awhile there I thought we were ahead but now I am not so sure. Enough about Christmas, how were your weekends? I spent mine with my best friend in an epic crafting and wine drinking extravaganza. We made some Christmas decor and had plans to make a lot more but time was often spent in the aisles of Hobby Lobby or Target leaving little time to actually craft.

Today’s gifts that give back would be perfect for stockings. Opening my stocking was always my favorite part of the whole  morning regardless of what other gifts I got that year. It was always fun to find all the small little gifts stuffed in there.

Sephora has a line of products called Beauty That Gives Back and each product supports a cause. The selection varies so check back often.

Currently you’ll find eye shadow that benefits an animal charity, various pink products that support breast cancer awareness, a body scrub for prostate cancer awareness, and even a lip color and mascara that give back. Even if you aren’t giving these items as gifts you could consider swapping out your usual favorite for one that gives back. Browse the beauty that gives back section here.

Inspirational Boards: World Wide Village

Today’s inspirational board was by special request from the lovely and super generous, Shannon Kelley. Shannon is a wedding blogger who is about to embark on a huge life change with her little family. She grew up with missionaries as parents and has decided to follow in their footsteps by moving her family to Haiti with an organization called World Wide Village. World Wide Village has a mission to  transform impoverished nations through Christian education, healthcare, nutrition and micro enterprise opportunities. Their current area of focus is Haiti. Shannon has a deep passion for the people of Haiti and has travel their several times to help in various ways. She determined that she could make much more of an impact by actually living there so pretty soon she will head out with her husband and adorable daughter. You can read about her experiences here.

Many of the photos I found of Haiti were gray, gloomy and sad like the one above. I decided to focus on the colorful culture of Haiti instead. In addition the colors below have a positive vibe which perfectly represents the positive impact Shannon and her family are about to make for the people of Haiti. Shannon tells me that Haiti is an amazing place to have a wedding due to it’s pristine beaches and tropical atmosphere.

Gifts That Give Back- Round #2

Happy Monday! We had a crazy winter storm this weekend which even included snow. Where we live in Arizona, it is possible to get snow but still super rare. Seeing that white stuff pile up on the ground made it feel even more like Christmas and the fact that it melted before we even had to think about shoveling it made it even better. Today is a super special day, my Grandma’s birthday! Happy Birthday to you Grandma!

There she is on her wedding day!

Today is Round #2 of Gives That Give Back, if you missed Round #1 you can find it here. I also came across a list of gifts that give back from one of my favs, Layla. You can browse her list here.

Before we get into today’s picks I wanted to tell you all about GiveBack.org. GiveBack.org is affiliated with tons and tons of retailers including everyone from Sephora to Target to Office Max. Basically if you plan to do any shopping online this year, you should register for a free account, shop through their links and a portion of every sale is put into an account and then you get to decide where to donate to. Essentially by signing up anything you buy could be a gift that gives back. If you are planning to shop online it really doesn’t make sense not to do it! Register here.

Slippers tend to be a classic holiday gift. It seems after a year of use, Christmas is the perfect time to make an upgrade. Why not buy these from Free Waters and help support clean water projects at the same time?

Don’t they look comfy?! This one pair of slippers will provide clean water for one person for an entire year. Those are some powerful slippers.

Kohl’s has teamed up with Good Housekeeping to provide a cookbook with 100% of profits going to their Kohl’s Cares program which helps children’s health and education initiatives nation wide.

The 136 page cookbook goes for a whole $5. It is essentially too good of a deal to pass up! This would be a great hostess gift packaged along with a batch of homemade cookies!

What are you favorite gifts to give? Let me know and I’ll see if I can find an option that gives back!

Inspirational Boards: Angel Trees

Who loves this time of year? People seem more jolly, homes are decorated and feel warm and cozy, and there is never a shortage of tasty treats. For some people though, the holidays aren’t so lovely. For families who are struggling the holiday season can be a massive burden that brings on a ton of guilt due to their inability to give their children a proper Christmas morning. Sure, it is easy for us adults to say that Christmas isn’t about presents but try telling that to a 5 year old. One of my favorite things to do is head to the angel trees in the malls and select a child. It is truly an honor to be able to shop for someone you have never met all the while knowing that your gesture will make their day. We’ve been “adopting” families and children since I can remember. My mom was a single parent and money was tight, in fact we joked that we could have been on those trees, but I still remember my mom thinking of others and taking us shopping to pick gifts for children in greater need than we were. For the past few years Kyle and I have opted out of gift giving all together and have picked families or causes to give to instead. I can tell you that we have not missed the gifts. Taking a bundle of gifts to the children’s floor at the hospital, or dropping off a bag of gifts to a family in need has been way more fulfilling. Many times you’ll forget all the gifts you gave and all those you received, but I can tell you I will never forget the experience of giving to people who were not expecting it and who really needed it.

Today’s board is inspired by those angel trees. Gold, white, and touches of evergreen create a gorgeous Christmas palette but to me I see smiles, gratitude, and children filled with joy.
