Trash the Dress Friday

One of our friends loves to bring me tabloid magazines. I have always just looked at the covers in the grocery store and never actually had any motivation to look at one so I was slightly intrigued when she put one in my hands. She was completely obsessed with the Casey Anthony trial and she is now filling her withdrawal with updates via National Examiner. The best part is that I am pretty certain that she thinks that they are reporting 100% factual information. So I decided to scan through it to see what I was missing all these years and I came across this…

After I threw up, I vowed to never curiously browse a tabloid again. Only in a tabloid can you have an article dedicated to your cat hair jewelry. Like everything else in that magazine, I cross my fingers that this isn’t real, but I fear it isn’t so. The article concludes by saying that the hair is from brushes not from coughed up hair balls. Because that as the jeweler says would be “nasty.” Yeah, that would be nasty, I’m glad we have some perspective here. You’re right, cat hair jewelry from brushes seems way more appealing now.  I hope I have saved you from any tabloid curiosity you might have.

Moving on… Today’s Trash the Dress session comes to you from Lukas VanDyke Photography.  What I love most is the way the Bride described the session. Here is what she had to say:

Not everyone can appreciate the austere and gritty beauty of the desert landscape, but it’s something we both love.  Early in our relationship Scott was helping build the test stands shown in the photos, and he took me out to spend the day in the desert with him.  When I jumped out of the truck with enthusiasm and opened up my arms to soak in the desert air he knew we were meant to be together. Now we have been married for 10 years and were looking for a fun way to celebrate.  When we saw Lukas VanDyke’s trash the dress promotion we knew it was the perfect fit.  We are more happily married than ever and our wedding photos were somewhat lackluster, so what better way to celebrate?  The rocket test site in the desert was the perfect place for us to shoot our trash the dress session and that day was as fun and meaningful as our wedding day.  It was like our own private way to renew our vows, and Lukas and Suzy captured it all perfectly.

Plus the images are AMAZING.

As a desert dweller, I see the beauty in dried up, open spaces and I love to see it contrasted with a gorgeous couple.

I love that they considered this like a private vow renewal. I never thought about it like that and I think that is a pretty sweet way to view a session. I also love that they picked two contrasting locations to get a wide array of images. Just gorgeous!

Thanks so much to Susannah and Lukas VanDyke for sharing this session!

  1. A HAIR BALL necklace?! Eww!! That’s a fun trash the dress session- and a great way to celebrate their 10 year!

  2. Most creative shot with the dress covered in dirt and oranges. Loved it. Hairball necklaces…NOT so much.

  3. ugh, seriously! gross on the cat hair necklace (WHY!?) but LOVE the trash the dress images. I’m a sucker for an orange grove. I think it is the “midwesterner transplant in california” in me :)

  4. cat hair necklace? you had me at meow.

(sorry i had to say it haha!)

  5. Ahahahahahaha…I’m laughing so hard at the cat jewelry story! That’s funny stuff Alicia…seriously funny :-) On another note, this TTD session is GORG. I love the image of the bride on the ground covered in dirt and oranges. Cool yellow jacket the groom has as well.

  6. What a sweet couple. I just love them! Thanks Charity Wedding for the feature!

  7. Awesome! We did the photos at the rocket launch base at around 9:00pm and then the orange grove one at 5:30am 2 hours away get get the best light. That was one tiring day but it was worth it! =)

  8. Ahahahaha! That’s such a crazy story! ick! I can’t even remember the last time I read one of those things, ha.

Gorgeous photos, as always ;) I love how the bride’s gown blows in the wind, and the orange field is a clever choice of scenery.

ps…I’m kind of glad that I stumble you on Fridays so I’ll never miss one of your Trash the Dress sessions!

  9. wow. the orange grove pics are great!

  10. Oh my god, this post is all around, 100% perfect.

But I will say that as gorgeous as that photo of the bride surrounded by oranges and dirt is, I heard the Dexter theme quietly in my head.

  11. Cat hair. Jewelry. I just can’t. I think you’ve cured me forever.

This session is beautiful, and that is super sweet that they thought of it like a vow renewal! I feel like day after sessions, etc are probably the best time to really enjoy and spend time with each other in your wedding finery, since the day of gets so busy! Awesome idea.

  12. Make it stop!

Thank you for the delicious images after.

But promise never mention the cat thing again?!?!

  13. now i love my cat… but i would NOT wear a necklace made from his fur!!! ever!!! eeeeeeeeew!!!!! (on a side note, i love the citrus wear it again!!!)

  14. Your trash the dress posts are slowly convincing me to do it someday, who knows someday. Your comments about jewelry from cat hair from a brush just had me laughing! You are right, like it really is so much better that it didn’t come from a hairball! It also made me laugh because my Pug sheds sooo much I was thinking I could do the same huh? lol. It is something we always say in my house that if we just collect enough of her hair we could build another Pug on our own, lol.

  15. Wow, this is amazing! First of all, cat hair jewelry-eww!! No further comment…

Regarding this TTD, lovin’ it! I love it that the couple dressed up in their wedding duds 10 years later, and what a great “secret vow renewal” indeed! My fave image has to be the bride on the ground with oranges around her body, and dirt covering her dress, like a dramatic death. Love the creativity put into this shoot, and the photography is amazing!

  16. Those orange grove shots are incredible!!!
